Freedom is often imagined as the absence of control. Yet freedom and power are more closely intertwined than they first appear. Freedom cannot be sustained without responsibility, while power without responsibility inevitably becomes domination. Drawing on Animal Farm, this work explores the fragile relationship between these two ideas.

The novel reveals that liberation from oppression does not necessarily lead to genuine freedom. Ideals fade, slogans of equality are distorted to serve those in power, and society gradually returns to a familiar hierarchy in which someone once again rules from the top.

True power does not arise from the submission of others. It grows from the willingness to take responsibility and the ability to build a shared order—not through domination, but through coexistence. Whether power is used to control the other or to live alongside them shapes entirely different societies.

The same question remains today. We long for freedom, yet often avoid the responsibility required to sustain it. We criticise power while overlooking our own role in creating and maintaining social order. Perhaps freedom is not simply the absence of control, but something that can only exist when responsibility is shared.
